What are Essential Oils?

An assortment of essential oil bottles surrounded by freshly picked flowers and herbs

An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most frequently by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils, contrary to the use of the word "oil" are not really oily-feeling at all. Most essential oils are clear, but some oils such as patchouli, orange and lemongrass are amber or yellow in color.

Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant it was derived from. Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way.

Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Where essential oils are derived from the true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer. See the What are Fragrance Oils? article for more information on fragrance oils and why they are not used in aromatherapy.

The chemical composition and aroma of essential oils can provide valuable psychological and physical therapeutic benefits. These benefits are usually achieved through methods including inhalation and application of the diluted oil to the skin.

For detailed profiles on over 100 oils, see the Essential Oil Profiles area.

Essential oils are often used by diluting them with a carrier oil (sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, grapeseed oil) and then applying this blend to the skin for absorption. See the Carrier Oil Profile section for more detailed information about carrier oils.

Careful inhalation of the oils can also provide therapeutic benefit as the oil molecules enter the lungs and are absorbed into the bloodstream.

Essential Oils are usually sold for individual use in very small bottles. See the Storing Your Oils page for information on how to store your oils and to view pictures of essential oil bottles.

Essential oils can very greatly in quality and price. Various factors that can affect the quality and price of the oil include the rarity of the plant, country and conditions that the plant was grown, quality standards of the distiller, and how much oil is produced by the plant.

Essential oils can often be purchased as blends of several essential oils. The advantage if it is a blend of pure essential oils is that you can save from having to buy every essential oil individually. The disadvantage is that you have no control over the blend by not mixing it yourself nor can you reliably mix the blend with other oils.

She received her bachelor's degree in Information Management in 1989 and developed a unique talent for organizing information. As a devoted mother, Connie became excited about the possible uses of essential oils when she learned about the therapeutic and emotional effects that could be achieved by topical application and inhalation as opposed to ingestion. The growing demand for this information has evolved into this book and others.

Essential Oils Desk Reference [Hardcover]
Essential Science Publishing (Compiler)
$289.96
This is a very good detailed reference book for the use of therapeutic grade essential oils. It has information you won't get from the manufacturers of essential oils who are trying to steer clear of the FDA. However, there are some inconsistencies. There is a list of medical properties and then a list of what the oil is used for. The association between the medical properties and uses is rather vague at times. For instance, Cassia is listed as being anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-coagulant, but first on the list of uses is cataracts??? Also, wintergreen oil is recommended to not be used internally, but is in several products that are used internally. I have yet to find a safety warning about the overuse of methyl salicylate, so while this is a good reference it is incomplete.

Advanced Aromatherapy: The Science of Essential Oil Therapy [Paperback]
Kurt Schnaubelt Ph.D. (Author)
$49.95
In a field where so many books are filled with unproven claims, outright falsehoods, and just plain fluff, Kurt Schnaubelt's books stand out as serious, well researched works that accord aromatherapy the respect it deserves.
By focusing on the chemistry of essential oils, we learn *why* an essential oil works the way it does and how different chemotypes of the same EO can have vastly different effects (an important issue that is completely ignored by many aromatherapy books). We also learn why some EOs must be used with great caution. Dozens of oils are profiled with diagrams, lists of primary effects and contraindications, etc. There is also a chapter with proven recipes for a variety of physical, psychological, and cosmetic conditions. All methods of application are covered (including those well established in Europe but rarely used in the U.S., e.g., suppositories), and Dr. Schnaubelt candidly states where essential oil therapy is most effective (e.g., infectious diseases, hormonal imbalances, and problems affecting the psyche and nervous system) as well as where aromatherapy has relatively little to offer (allergic and autoimmune conditions as well as chronic metabolic and degenerative conditions).

What makes Advanced Aromatherapy even more of a gem is that Dr. Schnaubelt integrates the science of aromatherapy into a holistic rather than an allopathic framework and gives pointers on selecting the appropriate EOs by taking into account the totality of the patient's symptoms.

Essential Oils Integrative Medical Guide: Building Immunity, Increasing Longevity, and Enhancing Mental Performance With Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oils [Hardcover]
D. Gary Young N.D. (Author)
$84.95
"I recently purchased this book and ohhhhhh, what a find! So much wonderful information here. It starts with the basics of Essential Oils (E.O.), the writing is interesting and to the point without dragging you along. Theres a chapter on hormones, how they work and effect the body and how e.o.'s play into it. Theres a whole section with nothing but ailments listed alphabetically, what is entailed with the ailment, and what e.o. to use, best route to use it, eg. inhalation, topically with carrier oil, topically without an oil ( which is 'NEAT'), or by ingestion, and how often to apply/inhale, which 'single' or 'blended' oils to use. Another chapter listing the oils alphabetically and what they're best used for, so makes a nice cross-reference and tons more stuff. I think this book is informational even if you're not all that interested in e.o.'s, and a definate thumbs up if you are...enjoy! "

Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit: Restoring Emotional and Mental Balance with Essential Oils [Paperback]

Gabriel Mojay (Author)
$49.95
"I love this book. I am a Registered Aromatherapist who prepares blends for physical, mental, and emotional well being. The author writes with such detail that the oils become alive with their own personalities. The beginning is a brief explanation of Aromatherapy, Oriental medicine and Astrology. This is followed by a wonderful Materia Medica with explanations of 37 oils. Each oil is described in two pages which include a brief botanical description, ancient uses, oriental uses of a physical, emotional and spiritual nature, and an astrological description. He gives suggestions for oils along with detailed explanations for nervous tension, overthinking and worry, anxiety and apprehension, poor concentration and memory, lack of confidence and self-esteem, anger and frustration, disempowerment and indecision, depression and negativity, and problems in relating. I refer to this book often. "

Whether you're new to the world of Essential Oils, or a seasoned follower, there is a plethora of information for you in here. Each single oil and blended oil is explained, where it originates, what it's used for, how to apply it, where to apply it and how often. A big section is nothing but diseases listed alphabetically and how to treat it with the e.o.'s, also listed are nutritional supplements that help to heal that particular condition. I've owned the book for about 5 months now, and am still discovering new things in it. Also has a section on how to deal with sick pets.
